Vacheron Constantin Updates Overseas Tourbillon With Deep Red Dial

A bold new mood.

When Vacheron Constantin launched the Overseas Tourbillon in steel some seven years ago, it stood out as a compelling proposition. It is not every day that a tourbillon regulator appears in a sports watch, and the use of a non-precious metal case and bracelet made it a more accessible proposition within the brand’s collection and among its peers.

That first edition, however, followed a familiar formula: a blue dial paired with a steel case. A few years later, the watch was updated with a titanium case, lending it a more contemporary edge. Now, something far more unexpected has arrived. Vacheron Constantin has introduced a bold, youthful dial rendered in deep red, resulting in what is arguably the most striking iteration of the Overseas Tourbillon to date.

Deep red and grey

For Vacheron Constantin, a brand with a history stretching back to the mid 18th century, restraint has always been part of its identity. Even when the brand ventured into the realm of the luxury sports watch with an integrated bracelet, it remained conservative in its choice of dial colours, relying largely on black, white, and blue.

From time to time, however, the brand loosens up and introduces more expressive colours, without compromising its sense of refinement. In the past, this included a brown dial that has since been discontinued, followed more recently by olive green. Now comes the boldest expression yet. Rendered in deep red, the new dial is an unusual choice for a men’s watch, and even more so for one equipped with a tourbillon regulator. While the change is purely chromatic, it significantly alters the character of the watch, instantly setting it apart as one of the most memorable Overseas Tourbillon references of its era.

Balancing the intensity of the dial is a case and bracelet that remain restrained in tone. Their muted, grey appearance comes from titanium construction. One way to distinguish it from the steel version lies in the finishing details. On the steel model, the bezel notches are circularly brushed, while on the titanium version they are finely sandblasted.

Self-winding and thin

Inside the Overseas Tourbillon sits the in-house cal. 2160, introduced in 2018, which accounts for its long 80-hour power reserve, though it operates at a relatively slow 2.5 Hz. The true highlight of the cal. 2160 is its thoughtful design and layout. It features traditional plates and bridges with elegant curves, while the view of the movement remains completely unobstructed thanks to a clever peripheral rotor. Unlike conventional rotors that sit above the movement and obscure much of it, this thin half-circle ring is recessed to the same level as the movement and runs only along the outer edge, leaving the rest of the calibre fully visible.

As a result, the movement measures just 5.65 mm in height, contributing to a case thickness of 10.39 mm. Not the thinnest tourbillon sports watch, but paired with the wide 42.5 mm case, it achieves the flat profile characteristic of a luxury sports watch.

Another nod to traditional watchmaking is the construction of the tourbillon cage, inspired by Vacheron Constantin’s signature Maltese Cross. Its sharp inward and outward angles are executed in steel and finished beautifully, giving it both technical and visual appeal. The remainder of the movement is finished to the exacting standards expected from a top-tier haute horology brand, and the watch has earned the Poinçon de Genève, or Geneva Seal, as a mark of its quality construction and finishing.
