Bremont’s Terra Nova Collection gets a Bronze Makeover

Outdoors watch + bronze = classic combo

Last year Bremont, under the leadership of freshly minted CEO Davide Cerrato , ruffled plenty of feathers. The proudly British brand made its Watches & Wonders debut with fresh branding, a new strategy and a suite of new watches, with the field watch-inspired Terra Nova being the star of the show. All up, this represents a lot of change for a famously slow-moving industry — one which can get worked up over a new bezel color — and the internet reacted, well, predictably.

Fortunately, time heals all drama, and over the last 12 months, we’ve begun to see Bremont roll out its new vision, and in many cases, it looks pretty good. There have been new ceramic Supermarine watches that feel fresh, and over on the Terra Nova, there’s been a very pleasant caramel dial interpretation and a playfully cool pink model, which I would personally wear all day long. On top of that, the brand has tweaked some of the design details (such as the sizing of the logo) since the launch. It’s fair to say that the Terra Nova as a collection is starting to come into its own.

A new Terra Nova collection in bronze

This is where today’s triptych of new releases comes in. Anyone who’s followed Cerrato’s career will be aware that if the man loves anything, it’s a bronze-cased tool watch. So it’s not hugely surprising to see that the brand has dropped not one but three takes on the Terra Nova in a new bronze case. Lending a hand to the launch is ambassador (and adventurer) Aldo Kane, who’s taken to the sands surrounding Dubai for an appropriately bronze-hued launch.

First of all, the three-hand automatic. Like all the new watches, it uses an alloy of bronze that Bremont calls Cupro-Aluminium, which is essentially an alloy that adds aluminum and silicon into the copper-heavy alloy. It’s not the first time we’ve seen this type of alloy in watches — as the properties are particularly well-suited. The aluminum and silicon ensure the metal is hypoallergenic, and a little tougher on the wrist. More importantly, perhaps, the aluminum makes for a softer patination — you’re not going to get the heavy green verdigris of oxidization on this watch, but rather a slower, more even dulling of tone that many people find preferable. The time-and-date version is in the 40.5mm case and matched with a deep green dial in the Terra Nova’s graduated pattern that is exceptionally easy on the eye. It’s a great pairing with the vintage styling and the full-block luminous hour markers. It’s offered with a green nubuck leather strap, a woven nylon option and, most interestingly, a full-bronze bracelet.

Additional Terra Nova Bronze models include a compass and a chronograph

Next cab off the rank is the limited edition Turning Bezel Power Reserve model. Offered only on the bracelet, this outdoorsy watch with its compass bezel and power reserve indicator is limited to 100 pieces, and is the only watch of the three to feature a warm caramel dial, opting to accentuate the bronze case through tonal matching rather than contrast. Like the time only model, the case is 40.5mm across, and is rated to 100M.

Finally, the bronze chronograph offers yet another flavor of bronze. The green dial is back on this larger 42.5mm model, but the bezel, rather than being full bronze, has a black ceramic insert. The practical effect of this change is that the model feels a little dressier than her siblings. The black of the bezel is picked up in the chronograph registers, and as with the other green-dialled model, it comes with options of fabric, leather or metal bracelets.

A completely new collection is always a risky proposition for a brand, as it implies change and an evolution from comfortable norms. But these new bronze models, along with the dial variations from last year, begin to reveal what is possible. It’s clear that Terra Nova is a versatile and well-positioned product that will be at the heart of Cerrato’s vision for Bremont.
