Revolution Awards 2025: Best Design Watch — Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds
Watch design is an incredibly subtle art. You’re working with a complex object, small in size and bound by myriad constraints. But more than that, a well-designed watch is one built to last beyond the current fashions — there’s no built-in obsolescence in a mechanical timepiece, which means the design needs to be relevant for decades, if not longer. After all, there’s a reason the industry is dominated by blue-chip, heritage designs that have remained relevant for generations — being tweaked and evolved to remain relevant with the passing of time.
One such enduring design is the Reverso. With its bold geometry, long case and signature case design, Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most famous collection has been one of the defining symbols of dressy elegance for more than 90 years. But having a long-lived icon in your archives poses its own problems — there’s a fine line of what you can do to create an impactful interpretation. Do too little, and you struggle to stand out against the weight of your own history. On the other hand, if you make too many changes, you risk forever tarnishing the image of your beloved legacy piece.
Jaeger-LeCoultre absolutely nailed the brief when it came to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Tribute Monoface Small Seconds. It takes what, for many, is the core of the Reverso’s design appeal — that Art Deco-era chic, and dials it all the way up, all while making minimal substantive changes. At its base, this design is a monochrome take on the heritage-leaning Tribute Monoface Small Seconds, with a softly grained pink gold dial providing a contrast to the hands, case and bracelet, which, for all that they’re made from the same material, are finished with a high-polished sheen. Alone, this tone-on-tone treatment makes for an appealing design, but what tips it from good to great is the Milanese-style bracelet. Woven from 16 meters of gold thread, the supple and silky mesh is fitted with a sliding buckle, and is the absolute perfect pairing for the Reverso.
All in all, this is a design that transcends eras — embodying the elegance of the 1930s, evoking the opulence of the 1970s, and remaining timeless in every age.
