gérald genta Unveils Its Fourth Iteration Of The Gentissima Oursin, Adorned With Fiery Opals

That’s what you call a fire piece.

The story of the Gentissima Oursin began with a moment of serendipity on the Corsican coast in 1994, where Gérald Genta found inspiration in the distinctive form of a sea urchin. This chance encounter sparked an immediate creative response, with Genta translating the creature’s spiny, globular exterior into one of his most personal creations.

Three decades later, the Maison gérald genta revived this cherished design, introducing three distinctive interpretations in 2024. Each model showcased different facets of Genta’s vision through a 36.5mm convex titanium case adorned with 223 precisely placed beads: a bold black DLC-coated version with yellow-gold spikes, an elegant iteration featuring pink mother-of-pearl and diamond accents, and a refined anthracite model with white-gold beads.

Now, in the collection’s fourth iteration, the Gentissima Oursin Fire Opal is one what may call a truly flamboyant creation. Featuring a yellow-gold 3N case measuring 36mm, its sophisticated glass-blasted finish provides a subtle contrast to its most striking feature: 137 fire opals, each individually secured with yellow gold pins.

Color has become increasingly important, with brands incorporating more expressive gemstones. Yet this isn’t just about aesthetics, but perhaps an opportune moment to cultivate a broader appreciation for the mineralogical and geological significance of these stones. After all, the ongoing fusion of high jewelry and high watchmaking has shown a fascinating evolution beyond the traditional “shrink it and pink it” approach that has long plagued bejeweled timepieces.

The fire opals, formed where water becomes trapped in cooling lava, exhibit distinctive yellow, orange, and red pigments

In the case of the Oursin’s fire opals, these mineraloids were formed in the depths of Mexican volcanoes where water trapped in cooling lava creates distinct yellow, orange, and red pigments. Evelyne Genta recalled how her late husband would study stones under various light sources, finding endless fascination in their interaction with light. “The Oursin was among Gérald’s few creations that he was proudest of. He actually almost didn’t want to sell them and produced only very few for very close friends and clients.”

The entire collection emerges from the brand’s experimental Gentissima design laboratory. The orange cornelian dial harmonizes with the fire opals’ warm hues, while Genta’s signature octagonal influence appears subtly in the faceted crystal and case design. Matthieu Hegi, Artistic Director of gérald genta, explains the vision: “With this piece, we pushed the boundaries of the Gentissima Oursin creative concept to deliver something enshrined in rare gems, paying homage to Mr. Genta’s passion for organic colors, beautiful stones, and beauty in general.”
