Of Majesty and Reality
Drawing inspiration from the traditional art of crafting Japanese katana swords, the MRG-B2000JS is a remarkable embodiment of both the formidable strength and the exquisite beauty associated with this historic sword. This particular model celebrates the Juryoku-Maru: San, a katana specially commissioned by Casio to represent the pinnacle of their prestigious MR-G line. This line of timepieces, made exclusively in Japan at Casio’s Yamagata premium production facility, is distinguished by its meticulous selection of colors, materials and finishes, each chosen to reflect the essence of Majesty and Reality. Hence, the MR-G namesake.
The MRG-B2000JS not only symbolizes the world of the katana but also encapsulates the broader spectrum of Japanese aesthetics. It carries within it the spirit of artisanal craftsmanship, blending this with advanced technological features to create a product of unmatched quality. The bezel of the timepiece is crafted from recrystallized hybrid titanium, chosen for its ability to mirror the unique temper pattern characteristic of a katana blade’s sharp edge. Furthermore, the watch band features a textured finish in aogai blue shell lacquer, an homage to the traditional appearance of Japanese sword scabbards.
This commissioned sword features a katana blade, masterfully forged by the renowned swordsmith, Kamiyama Teruhira. Complementing the blade is an exquisite sheath, crafted with aogai blue shell lacquer, designed by the esteemed traditional artisan, Nomura Mamoru.
The remarkable craftsmanship exhibited by Teruhira and Mamoru imparts a majestic shine to the Juryoku-Maru, which is so profoundly brilliant that the name of the sword itself was inspired by the Japanese word for brilliance, San. This term was aptly added to underscore the exceptional luminescence and artistry embodied in the sword.
Master Swordsmith: Kamiyama Teruhira
Mr. Teruhira, a distinguished swordsmith renowned for his extraordinary skill, stands at the forefront of contemporary katana craftsmanship in Japan. His dedication to the dual ideals of strength and aesthetic excellence in Japanese sword making resonates with Casio’s vision for their G-Shock line. This shared ethos led Casio to entrust Mr. Teruhira with the creation of a unique G-Shock inspired sword, named the Juryoku-Maru: San.
Throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Teruhira has garnered significant recognition for his contributions to the craft, earning prestigious accolades such as the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award and the Minister of Education, Sports, Science and Technology Award. These honors are a testament to his mastery and innovative approach to the traditional art of sword making, reflecting his status as a leading figure in the field.
Lacquer Artisan: Sagaraden Nomura
Mr. Nomura is the third-generation proprietor of the renowned Nomura family business based in Kyoto. He embarked on his career in the traditional crafts industry at the young age of 20, after acquiring specialized skills in urushi lacquer techniques. Mr. Nomura is deeply immersed in his craft, diligently managing every stage of the creation process, from the initial lacquering to the intricate details of ornamentation. This includes the delicate art of mother-of-pearl inlay and the use of metallic powder in maki-e techniques.
In recognition of his exceptional skill and dedication to Japanese traditional crafts, Mr. Nomura was honored with the prestigious Japan Traditional Crafters Chairman’s Award in 2018, specifically for his exquisite work on a lacquer natsume, a traditional container used to store matcha tea powder. His mastery and artistic vision have also been showcased internationally, with his art panels, interior mirrors and other bespoke pieces featured at five Maison & Objet Paris trade fairs in France.
An Artful Bezel
The bezel of the watch features an intricate design inspired by Kamiyama’s signature blade craftmanship, utilizing layers of pure titanium and Ti64 alloy. These materials undergo a rigorous process involving high-temperature and high- pressure compression, ensuring durability and resilience. Subsequent to this, the titanium layers are meticulously cut and polished. They are then subjected to a recrystallization process which not only strengthens the material but also helps in forming the bezel into its distinctive shape. This process also brings out a unique interwoven pattern of the two titanium variants, giving each bezel a one-of-a-kind appearance.
Similarly, the watch case undergoes a recrystallization process designed to mimic the appearance of large nie crystals, a key feature observable in the temper pattern of Kamiyama’s blades. This attention to detail in replicating the blade’s aesthetics extends the craftsmanship from the blade to the watch.
Due to the precise and individualized nature of the manufacturing processes used, each watch exhibits a unique pattern on both the bezel and the case. This variability ensures that each piece is a unique work of art, reflecting the meticulous techniques used in its creation.
Visual Allure of the Dial
The exquisite design of the Juryoku-Maru: San watch is highlighted by the traditional diamond shapes known as hishimaki-gara adorning the base of the dial, lending it an air of sophistication. Surrounding the perimeter, a meticulously crafted decorative motif, inspired by the intricate folds of a traditional Japanese fan, enhances the visual allure of the watch. Additionally, the indexes on the dial are subtly shaped to resemble the graceful curvature of a katana blade, further embedding the essence of Japanese culture into the design.
The dial of the MR-G is equipped with a Super Illuminator, which is Casio’s high-brightness LED light designed to ensure optimal readability in low-light conditions. The dial is shielded by a scratch resistant sapphire crystal that boasts high transparency with an anti-reflective coating to minimize glare and enhance visibility.
Distinct Bracelet and Caseback
The exquisite craftsmanship of traditional artisan Nomura Mamoru is eloquently manifested in the decorative aogai blue shell lacquer found on the sword’s sheath. This captivating design, crafted specifically for this timepiece, exemplifies a seamless blend of heritage and modernity. Casio has innovatively applied its pioneering structural color technique to infuse the timepiece with a dynamic visual appeal. This technique ensures that the color and texture of the watch vary intriguingly with changes in the viewing angle.
To achieve this effect, Casio utilizes microlevel ultra precision processing. This advanced method meticulously creates microstructures on the metal surface, which reflect light to produce an extraordinary spectrum of colors. The choice of materials is equally impressive. The special alloy DAT55G, known for being three times harder than pure titanium, has been carefully selected for its durability and ability to protect the delicate structural color from scratches. Furthermore, a robust layer of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating enhances the scratch resistance, providing superior protection against wear and tear.
The caseback features Kamiyama’s meticulously hand engraved Japanese character 燦, meaning San, onto each individual timepiece. The engraving employs the same traditional technique he uses to engrave the sword. This unique inscription bestows a distinct and personal touch to every watch, ensuring that no two pieces are identical. The collection is an exclusive series, limited to only 800 pieces globally, with each caseback bearing its own serial number.
